What Happens At A Caucus?

 What Happens At A Caucus?

The 2010 Caucus will be held on Tuesday, March 16.  Registration begins at 6:30 pm. Everyone needs to sign in to their precinct before 7pm.  If you arrive late, you will be allowed to participate on the business that occurs after your arrival, but your vote will not count on anything that took place before your arrival.

All registered Dems are encouraged to attend their precinct caucuses.  If you are not sure of your registered party, you may look it up at the Secretary of State’s website.

At the caucus, the precinct chair will take a “straw poll” to determine your preference for the US senate race — Michael Bennet or Andrew Romanoff. Delegates will be elected to represent your precinct at the El Paso County Assembly on April 10th.  The delegates will be apportioned according to the results of the straw poll for the US Senate race.

Elections will also be held for two Precinct Co-Chairs to serve a term of two years. Active precincts with chairpersons and volunteers are the building blocks of the Democratic Party.  They are essential for getting out the vote in the fall.  Democrats have several important statewide races, including Governor and US Senate, as well as many local candidates.

All Democrats are encouraged to attend their caucus and to consider serving as Precinct Chair. If there is currently no chair for your precinct, and thus, no one to conduct the caucus, you can step up to do so.  Training sessions are being held over the next two weeks, and any registered democrat in that precinct can serve as convener of the caucus.  That way things will go smoothly on caucus night.

If you do not know your precinct number, look it up at the Secretary of State’s website.

Jill McCormick is the Chair of the Precinct Development Committee for EPC Democratic Party.  For information about your precinct or to find out if there is an active chair, contact Jill at jillnpeter@earthlink.net
